Southport

Located on the Cape Fear River and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at the southern most part of North Carolina, Southport is a charming coastal town. Known for its maritime heritage, oak-lined streets, and friendly small-town atmosphere, Southport is idealistic while offering of tons of activities for families.

The town’s rich history dates back to the 1700s, with roots in shipping, fishing, and military defense. Strolling through downtown, visitors can find a mix of antique shops, seafood restaurants, and art galleries housed in historic buildings.
Southport’s scenic waterfront and quiet ambiance have made it a popular filming location for movies and TV shows, including Safe Haven, A Walk to Remember, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Summer Catch Dawson’s Creek, and more. You can visit the locations where filming took place, but they are NOT touristy. It feels so charming and authentic, and visitors can see the charm that inspired movie sets.

Oak Island on the Atlantic Ocean and the exclusive Bald Head Island are right around the corner which makes Southport a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Its Southern hospitality and coastal beauty make it a true hidden gem on North Carolina’s southeastern coast.

Visit the Movie Sites
- Southport Coffee Company. A charming market, sandwhich and coffee shop. A filming site in the movie Safe Haven, they offer wonderful food and drink in a laid back atmosphere.
- Visit the Southport Pier and Riverwalk. This location exudes so much southern charm.
- Stroll historic West Brunswick Street used as a filming site in various movies.
- Take the Fort Fisher Ferry. The terminal and ferry were used in various films and episodes.
- Check out the Fort Johnston Historical Society museum. This free exhibit displays artifacts from movies and TV shows filmed there.

Take the Ferry from Fort Fisher. It’s a 45 minute scenic ride on the Cape Fear River from a historic state park and its $7 a carload. Once you leave the terminal in Southport its a short 10 minute drive to historic Southport town and waterfront!
Check out the Provision House, on the water. This affordable serve yourself fresh seafood spot is always busy and always great. It has the ultimate southern waterfront laid back vibes.
Check out the local shops in town and on East Moore and North Hale Streets. A family favorite is the Christmas Shop. Loaded with affordable treats, candy, old fashioned toys, stuffies, and ornaments.
