Charlottesville

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, and American history.
Families with kids can explore Shenandoah National Park and hike along Skyline Drive, just a short drive from downtown. A popular hike is the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail. It’s 2.25 miles one way through an old railroad tunnel. There is no lighting, so bring a flashlight because it becomes completely black halfway. For places to run around in town, McIntire Park and IX Art Park offer open spaces and kid-friendly art installations.

Charlottesville is rich in history and the most popular site is Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Children can learn about early American life and explore the beautiful estate. The cafe on site is perfect for a coffee or snack. For an authentic lunch, Michie Tavern is just down the road and offers a colonial experience, complete with traditional food and costumed guides. Other worthwhile stops with children are The University of Virginia where they can run along “The Lawn and enjoy seeing the single and prestigious dorms along it. Finally, James Monroe’s Highland is another worthwhile stop with kids. The grounds are free to wander along or you can tour the inside of the estate.


Some favorite places to eat with kids in town are Bodo’s Bagels and Chaps Ice Cream on the historic Downtown Mall, a pedestrian-friendly stretch lined with shops, cafes, and live music.
